Video Story Idea

Trisha Seelig and Sami Badgen

a.       Our story is about how independent students, as classified by the university, are making it financially at UT. We will get statistics on the number of independent versus dependent students on campus. There is an on campus organization called Horns Helping Horns that is specifically dedicated to helping independent students. We plan to interview dependent students on what they think about independent students, independent students on their stories and how they are able to financially make it at UT, and the Horns Helping Horns organization on how they help independent students. We will possibly find out if and how independent students are able to have a social/student life. Through all of these multiple interviews, we will be finding a central theme.
b.      Opening:
B-roll of the Horns Helping Horns office or narrated script: you think ____, but really _____
Interview random people, what do you think an independent student is?
Middle:
Interviews and narration of all interviewees
(Mixed in pictures of student/social life accordingly)
End:
B-roll of independent students lined up holding signs saying something along the lines of “We don’t need easy, we just need possible”
**make the story consistent**
Our message: Independent students have made possible the idea of higher education, despite little to no financial support, proving that there are always ways to attend college, despite the odds
Take a fable/fairy tale spin on it with a moral
c.       We will give the background story of each independent student as text, while the video will be playing of us interviewing them on how they are able to succeed at the University of Texas at Austin, a fairy expensive school. We will also provide text of statistics (i.e. how many people actually know about the existence of independent students) while showing video of dependent students voicing their opinions on students identified as independent. In addition, we will use text narrative of the Horns Helping Horns background as they are interviewed on what they do for independent students at the university.
d.      1) Horns Helping Horns, because it is an on campus organization dedicated to helping independent students
2) Independent students, because we need to hear their side of the story and they are the central focus of our video story
3) Dependent students, because we want to know how they perceive independent students (it will give a twist to our story), also dependent students that hold down jobs and are a bit self-sustaining, but not independent.

  1. Very detailed plan!

You said that you will provide text to introduce the background of each independent student. Make sure to keep the text brief and interesting. Maybe have the independent students to write about themselves? Just an idea.
