Austin sets stage for local music
Austin is widely known as the “Live Music Capital of the World.” Bands travel far and wide to perform in this city, often overshadowing local bands.
However, local bands are given chances to shine as well, if on a smaller scale. Events like Fast Forward Austin feature local musicians and also bring in obscure bands from other areas, creating great networking and collaboration opportunities. Similarly, record stores here in Austin such as Waterloo Records and End of an Ear work with local bands to sell CDs, organize launch parties and host signings.
Local bands are not frequently given the opportunity to perform in famous venues such as Stubb’s Bar-B-Q or Emo’s, and must settle for smaller bars and clubs throughout Austin on nights encouraging local bands to take the stage.
The live music scene is one of the many factors that draws people to Austin, giving local bands a head start in reaching audiences open to new and unusual music.

Video proposal
Austin is often touted as the live music capitol of the world, but is that becaus there is so much local talent, or because bigger names get all the fame? We hope to explore whether or not local musicians are given adequate exposure, or if the competition for venues and gigs creates a vacuum. And if this vacuum exists, is anyone in Austin trying to improve local talent exposure?

With new media come new ways to share information with the world. Let me start by sharing some personal information... about my partners. Ale is from Laredo, TX, and like so many of us in this class, she is a freshman and majoring Journalism. She has two dogs: Cinnamon and Brandy.
She hopes to become a media journalist and is therefore also taking Radio-Television-Film classes at the University. Ale likes to read, write, draw cartoons, and watch films.
Her favorite news site is New York Times, but she also is likely to be found clicking on Huffington Post links that appear on Facebook.
Will is a freshman majoring in Journalism from Dallas, Texas. Will has an Australian Kelpie named Sam that he's had for two years. Will does not yet know what area of journalism he would like to pursue, but he would like to eventually work in sports. Will wants me to let the world know he has webbed toes... but this has yet to be proven.
CNN is Will's go-to news website, and he occasionally checks Yahoo! News.
Now, a little about myself. Edward Hopper is by far my favorite artist. I find that his work is timeless and beautiful in an extremely understated way.
I really loved the first season of the television show "Girls" that is written and acted in by Lena Dunham. The second season has not been quite as good so far, but I still have high hopes for what's to come.
Time to sign off, but until next time... "Hook 'em!"
