Austin sets stage for local music

Austin is widely known as the “Live Music Capital of the World.” Bands travel far and wide to perform in this city, often overshadowing local bands.
However, local bands are given chances to shine as well, if on a smaller scale. Events like Fast Forward Austin feature local musicians and also bring in obscure bands from other areas, creating great networking and collaboration opportunities. Similarly, record stores here in Austin such as Waterloo Records and End of an Ear work with local bands to sell CDs, organize launch parties and host signings.
Local bands are not frequently given the opportunity to perform in famous venues such as Stubb’s Bar-B-Q or Emo’s, and must settle for smaller bars and clubs throughout Austin on nights encouraging local bands to take the stage.
The live music scene is one of the many factors that draws people to Austin, giving local bands a head start in reaching audiences open to new and unusual music.

Video proposal

Austin is often touted as the live music capitol of the world, but is that becaus there is so much local talent, or because bigger names get all the fame? We hope to explore whether or not local musicians are given adequate exposure, or if the competition for venues and gigs creates a vacuum. And if this vacuum exists, is anyone in Austin trying to improve local talent exposure?

Lab 1, J302F

Hey guys! My name is Alex Cannon.  I'm a freshman Journalism major, and I hope to double major in Spanish. I'm from a little town called Mexia, where the only thing to do is go to Whataburger (where I work(ed)) or Walmart. 40 miles from Waco. I use ESPN for my news because mostly I just keep up with sports.
My friends' names are Renee Moreno and Morgan Neustein.
Renee is a Journalism major from Austin, though I already know her from working with TSTV Sports last semester. Her favorite news site is Yahoo! News. She was involved in theater all through high school, keeps up with sports (Houston fan as far as NFL and MLB go) and reads a lot of fiction and comedy books. Renee has 2 younger sisters.
Morgan is a Journalism major from San Diego, CA! Shes here at UT to be kind of in the middle between her family in California and family in New York. She uses the NYTimes for her online news needs. She likes to run & hike & swim. Favorite shows are "The Office" and "Modern Family". Morgan likes to read occasionally and when she does, her favorite author is David Sedaris. Youngest of 5 and she has a labradoodle puppy!

I really like this picture, its unique and pretty in a grody way. Plus, it's an original from www.teenink.com, which is one of my favorite sites that publishes teen poems, stories, art, and all kinds of stuff!

And, my favorite video on YouTube at the moment is NFL Bad Lip Reading. If you haven't seen it yet, you NEED to watch it, its super funny.
