Good/Bad Extra Credit Video Examples

The first example I would like to show is titled Destroying Syria's Past from the New York Times.  While this topic is pretty interesting, overall I don't think it is best suited for being presented in a video.  A lot of the shots are underground looking at remains of old civilizations, and the only light they have is from a flashlight.  Therefore a lot of the video to me is unclear.  Another problem I had is with our narrators voice, it has very monotone and really just made me want to go to sleep from the moment I started listening to him.  At about the three minute mark it begins to look like a Soundslides project, which might've been better suited for the topic.  The video above ground that they do have doesn't really work to help tell the story.  For example we spent a good 30 seconds on a Facebook screen for the work a man does, whereas I'd be more interested to see him doing his work.

Renaissance in Grand Central Station, also by the New York Times does a much better job of telling a video story.  For one thing, this story could only be told through a multimedia perspective, without being able to hear what these people do it is hard to grasp the beauty in it and to see why it's such a big deal.  This reporter's voice, the few times we hear it, is a lot more vibrant than the one in the first video.  But, we don't get to hear much from the reporter, instead the story is told mostly from the people it's about which adds a nice level.  The shots are all really nice and just help to capture what it is they do, which is singing for people in public locations.  Through video we get to see, how most people react to them better than any description ever could.

Video Story Idea

Story Idea
Our story idea is to look at how relationship have been affected by social media.  We've recently noticed how unsocial people are, even if they're around others, simply because they were easily distracted by social media.  We want to look at how different it is in interaction via social media versus in person.  Looking specifically at quality of relationships, number of close friends and how we interact in day to day lives, because of these new outlets.

Structure:
Hey! You, See, So.
-Hey: compare two friendships one in a personal interaction one with no interaction in person, hanging out but on phone
-You: This is something everyone has been through, it's pretty unavoidable, even just witnessing it.  So it applies to you.
-See: interviews describing relationships with examples.  We'll look at both pros and cons
-So: Offer some solutions. but leave it open to viewer to see their own lives and how Social Media has affected them and if they need to change.

Text Component: 

In addition to containing some of the narrative of the video the text would also include more statistics on this problem, as well as links to websites that help offer solutions. Specifically it has been brought to our attention that there are things that can block a person from accessing their Facebook for a period of time.  The text component will allow us to expand on different topics (Psychology study) that might not be quite as interesting in video format. We want to ensure that both of them supplement each other, yet we don’t want anyone to have to read/view both in order to fully understand our topic.

-Look into...there is probably some organization on campus that deals with the issue
-Grad Students (Psychology) (Facebook with Friends Psychology Study)

First Lab of J302F

Hey guys! I'm Renee Moreno and I am really looking forward to contributing to this page for the next semester and to learn all kinds of new technology.  Hopefully I'm not completely terrible at all of this computer stuff...only time will tell.  Well I'm a freshman journalism major at the University of Texas. My home is right here in the wonderful city of Austin, Texas.

Today I'm sitting with Alex Cannon and Morgan Neustein.  They both seem like lovely ladies.  The best part is they're both freshman Journalism majors also!  Alex from a small town in Texas called Mexia while Morgan is from all the way on the west coast in San Diego, California. 

One of the most important things about Alex is that she works at Whataburger.  She worked there during high school and is continuing to work at the one here on the drag.  Her dream job is to be a sports journalist and cover football.  She wants to double major in Spanish to be able to study abroad in Latin America! Super awesome.  She says she loves to read like a ton.  She would pick reading over TV. So we would probably get along well since I love to read too!  Alex is really a jack of all trades and even writes poetry.

Morgan is from a town right out side of San Diego.  Being in that lovely weather she's athletic and likes hiking and swimming.  The Office and Modern Family are two of her can't miss shows.  Her favorite author is David Sedaris.  More book people!  Wooh!  She is the youngest of five children. Wow.  That childhood is sure to come with some interesting stories.  A two year old labradoodle is Morgan's puppy that she loves. 

Alex loves to read ESPN's website to catch up on news in the sports world while Morgan prefers to read The New York Times.

The rest of our requirements are to put in a picture and a video.  So I want to leave you with a little bit more about me with these things.  I live for inspirational quotes and love sharing them with others so my Pinterest (yes, I LOVE Pinterest) is full of pretty versions of quotes so I'm going to share one of my favorites with y'all today. 

Then for a video I think I will leave you with a good smile. So I want to share a video that one of my teachers last year shared with me one day when I didn't get the reference that he made.  I just think that this little girl is kinda precious so that's one of the reasons I love this video. 

So... How about.... CUPCAKES?

Yay! I did it! First blog post accomplished! Wooh! Maybe this semester won't be so hard after all...
